FIRST PLACE PRESCHOOL OFFERS FREE TO LOW FEE EDUCATIONAL, CULTURAL AND PERSONAL ENRICHMENT FOR YOUNG LEARNERS.

Raising a family is not only a personal and time challenge.  The costs of tending to family needs continue to increase in multiple ways – time, finance, travel, educational and other expenses are basic requirements for the mandatory daily schedule.  With parents making sacrifices to earn the funds and resources to fit the bill for these requirements, another important question is: Who’s watching the children while mom and dad, or sometimes a single parent of the two, are at work?

Seeking a trustworthy person or organization is vital in deciding who will fill the role of guardian, teacher and steward while the parents are not present – even if just for daily duty, like work or school.  First Place School (a private school and non-profit) located in the heart of the Central District at 172 20th Ave in Seattle is one organization committed to a culturally, educationally and personally responsive and enhanced experience for children.

“Our children are so important to us”, says Carolyn Brown, Early Learning Director at First Place. “We have space for 53 students and each is as important as the other; First Place makes a great effort to inspire and engage our students – they’re never too young to learn.”  Brown’s statement is supported by numerous sociological and psychological studies, indicating that children begin to retain and engage knowledge at a range of young ages, from infants performing remarkable feats of learning, to about three and four years old, where seemingly most children’s individual comprehension and schoolroom learning abilities begin to be noticed by adults in general.

“We enroll children as young as three and four years old”, says Brown.  The First Place website states the same, and reinforces that the evidence-based teaching and learning techniques employed by First Place produce a creative curriculum, with the goal of generating positive and memorable experiences for lifetime learners.  The educational and preschool programs are active weekdays until 5pm, providing care throughout the day. The preschool coupled with the early learning program at First Place offer an all-encompassing experience of care, education, cultural enrichment and responsiveness and personal attention.

As part of First Place’s community involvement and goal to enrich and strengthen the surrounding community, there is a housing assistance program that helps the ‘least advantaged families with children’ to secure stable housing.  Sometimes the housing is temporary due to the overwhelming demand for housing resources, but First Place’s primary commitment is to children and those who take care of them.

A full service preschool coupled with active and results-based practices both educationally and within the community, First Place is one of the organizations that serves as a vital example for the emergence of Africatown and city of Seattle as a whole, in terms of creating a place and resources for the most vulnerable and most precious members of our communities.
